Live tables at Silverstar, and what 'live betting' means in South Africa
Two different things share one search term: dealer tables on the Muldersdrift floor, and betting over the internet. Here is where each one stands.
See our partner's offer →Silverstar Casino deals 36 live tables — poker, roulette, blackjack and baccarat — on a floor that is open Monday to Sunday, 24 hours. Online, South Africa allows betting on sport and horse racing with a bookmaker licensed by a provincial gambling board, while interactive online casino games are not licensed.
The tables, then the law
- Silverstar runs 36 tables covering poker, roulette, blackjack and baccarat, dealt in person.
- Salon Privé holds 12 of the venue's tables plus 140 slot machines, with two cashier booths and its own bar and food service.
- The floor is open Monday to Sunday, 24 hours, so table availability depends on the hour rather than on a closing time.
- Dedicated smoking and non-smoking areas run across the gaming floor.
- In South Africa, betting on sport and horse racing with a bookmaker licensed by a provincial gambling board is lawful online.
- Interactive online casino games — slots, roulette, blackjack and live-dealer tables played over the internet — are not licensed in South Africa.
- The National Gambling Board reconfirmed that position publicly in February 2026.
Where each activity stands
| Activity | Status in South Africa | Where it happens |
|---|---|---|
| Table games at a licensed casino | Lawful, provincially licensed | Silverstar floor, 36 tables |
| Sports and horse-racing betting online | Lawful with a provincially licensed bookmaker | Licensed bookmakers |
| Online casino games | Not licensed | Not offered by any lawful local operator |
| Live-dealer tables over the internet | Not licensed | Not offered by any lawful local operator |
The split that confuses most visitors
South Africa does not have a single yes-or-no answer to 'is gambling legal here'. Land-based casinos are licensed by provincial authorities and have operated that way for decades. Betting on sport and horse racing is also lawful online, provided the bookmaker holds a licence from a provincial gambling board.
The part that is not licensed is the interactive online casino: slots, roulette, blackjack and live-dealer studios streamed to a browser. The National Gambling Board restated that position publicly in February 2026 and asked provincial authorities to act on it. A remote-gambling bill has been before Parliament since 2024 and has not been passed.
For a visitor the practical consequence is simple. The 36 tables described on this page are dealt in front of you at the venue on the R28; anything offering the same games through a screen is not doing so under a South African casino licence. Our entry page covers what the door asks for.
